Experimental effects of rumination styles on salivary cortisol responses

چکیده
Emerging research suggests that rumination increases risk for negative health outcomes. In the first experiment to investigate cortisol responses during angry rumination, participants were provoked and induced to engage in self-focused rumination, provocation-focused rumination, or distraction. Consistent with social threat theory, self-focused rumination maintained high levels of cortisol following provocation, whereas provocationfocused rumination and distraction facilitated decreases in cortisol. However, even within the provocation-focused rumination condition, adopting an emotionally reactive, self-immersed perspective was associated with higher levels of cortisol as were thoughts about the self. Individual differences in displaced aggression but not general aggression were also positively associated with cortisol levels in the provocation-focused condition. The present findings shed light on rumination styles and cortisol responses in ways that may have long-term consequences for health and well-being.

Physical activity moderates effects of stressor-induced rumination on cortisol reactivity.
OBJECTIVE Physically active individuals have lower rates of morbidity and mortality, and recent evidence indicates that physical activity may be particularly beneficial to those experiencing chronic stress. The tendency to ruminate increases and prolongs physiological stress responses, including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses as indexed by cortisol reactivity to stressful e...
متن کاملPost-stress rumination predicts HPA axis responses to repeated acute stress.
Failure of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to habituate to repeated stress exposure is related with adverse health outcomes, but our knowledge of predictors of non-habituation is limited. Rumination, defined as repetitive and unwanted past-centered negative thinking, is related with exaggerated HPA axis stress responses and poor health outcomes. The aim of this study was to test w...
متن کاملEffect of Massage on Salivary Cortisol Level in Preterm Neonates
Background: Stress in preterm neonates is associated with morbidity and mortality. Preterm newborns who are in need of special care are at risk of experiencing stress because of separation from the mother, ambient noises, lighting intensity, and medical procedures. Massage is believed to reduce stress through touch stimulation, and the cortisol is one of the indicators of the stress response. T...
متن کاملRumination, fear, and cortisol: an in vivo study of interpersonal transgressions.
The authors sought to examine whether rumination about psychologically painful, though nontraumatic, interpersonal transgressions is associated with increased salivary cortisol. They measured salivary cortisol, rumination about a transgression, fear and anger regarding the transgressor, perceived painfulness of the transgression, and positive and negative mood in 115 undergraduates who had expe...
متن کاملExtending the recovery window: Effects of trait rumination on subsequent evening cortisol following a laboratory performance stressor.
Mental rehearsal of past stressors through rumination may extend the physiological stress response and exposure to stress-related physiological mediators, such as cortisol. If repeated over time, this prolonged activation may contribute to a number of chronic health conditions. Findings from the emerging literature on the tendency to ruminate and its association with cortisol have been somewhat...
